Issues With Your Tongue

park slope family dentistryYour tongue is a larger part of your oral health than you may realize. It not only helps you properly chew food, but it also helps you from not choking on what you’re eating, allows you talk, and helps you taste things. If you’re experiencing problems with your tongue, it can be a clue that some else is medically wrong. Here are some common issues you may experience with your tongue and what they could be signally in your body.

White spots – If you have white spots on your tongue, it can be alarming to look in the mirror and see them staring back at you. However, this is a common problem that is usually diagnosed as candidiasis or thrush. Thrush is a yeast infection in the back of your throat that is usually brought on by antibiotics, asthma, or diabetes. It’s treated with medication and usually goes away fairly quickly.

Bright red/pink-colored tongue – Another common issue people have with their tongue is referred to as “Strawberry tongue,” which is when that area of your mouth is red or pink and enlarged. It’s often painful for the sufferer but usually isn’t a life-threatening situation. Strawberry tongue can be caused by food allergies, B-12 and folic acid deficiencies, and scarlet fever.
