We all get a little nervous when thinking about going to the dentist, especially if we know that we that we may not be as adamant about flossing as we should be!  For most of us, the dentist recommends a six month check up for a comprehensive dental exam. For those who dislike or fear the dentist, this may seem like a daunting task. However, it is vital to your overall health! You want to ensure your teeth are in tip top shape to last you a life time, completely pain free.

Before heading to Park Slope Dentistry, it is helpful to know what exactly your dental exam will entail. Before the dentist examines you, you will be asked to provide them with insight into your overall health including new medicines or if there have been any changes in your overall health since your last visit. Are there any new pains or discomforts? After the initial health review, the physical exam starts, which will typically include the following:

  • The dentist will evaluate your head and neck to look for unusual signs like swelling or bleeding
  • The soft tissue inside of your mouth will be checked for unusual signs
  • The gums and teeth are next, looking for any unusual growth or spots
  • X-rays will be taken to take a further look into any decay or cavities
  • Depending on your appointment, you may receive a tooth cleaning, polishing, and flossing
  • Finally, you will be given recommendations and asked to schedule any necessary follow-up appointments

Your checkup really will be that easy! Again, for someone who hates the dentist, this may seem daunting, but the more relaxed you are, the quicker and easier your procedure will go.
